You’ve found the Coronado t-shirt that an earlier generation of surfers knows a greater meaning to surf in Coronado beyond the Coronado Shores. The Outlet Fence t-shirt is printed from original charcoal artwork by Jim Montalbano and harkens back to a day when the North Beach area of Coronado had consistently excellent formed barreling waves (nowadays it often closes out). “Outlet” is a name established by early local surfers from the natural spring water that flowed from that area of land into the surf zone. With the improvements to the Navy Golf Course, the flow got cut off. There’s a lot more to that story. However, many from that time say it helped form the great sandbar barreling lefts and rights. Jim Montalbano is a local surfer from that time who could be seen getting barreled regularly, among others. Read more about Jim Montalbano and see his entire collection.
